'The serious me' series

The importance of the media in the life of any child cannot be underscored. The most formative years of any child are not in the university, they happen to take place in the home and formative schools like the primary and secondary schools, and most importantly, the home. Moreso, the most important tools of formation include the parents, immediate family members, peers and a whole lot of television.

What children see especially these days can even be attributed mostly as the biggest formative tool of any child's development. I used to believe that a child's grammatical fluency could not be at it's most impressive until he/she grows up, but my 7-yr old sister proved me wrong when she was barely 3. Thanks to cartoon network, i could hardly catch up to her English. The words that came out of her mouth were just amazing. Not like she was saying something out of the world, but her coordination and fluency were just so serious. I remember vividly that even at age ten, i was always careful as to what came out of my mouth, (thanks to my 'locacious' environment). However, I believe that i have turned out really good today thanks to television.

However, as good as the media is to the child's development is, it is also leaving a number of dastard impressions imprinted on their minds. You only need to attend a 5-yr old birthday today and you can see for yourself what i mean. the kind of erotic dances that these kids do on the dance-floors make you wonder whether they are really kids. Funny enough, the mothers seem to be proud of what these kids are getting exposed to daily. They even encourage them by buying them clothes that allows them to imitate the dancers they see on t.v. I have seen two videos of girls dancing in birthdays, that left me appalled, as well as the people around me who saw these videos.

I am the type of person that advocates that kids should be allowed to have a rich knowledge of how things operate in the world by exposing them to it and telling them how it affects them, letting them know the truth about about issues. It doesn't make any sense that these truths be hidden from children when they can as well be exposed to them elsewhere outside the parents' radar. However, the uttermost caution should be taken in doing this. Having been privileged to meet a lot of people and study them in this institution, I am of the opinion that thing need to change fast. Thank God for my parents and Jesus, maybe i would have been lost to the media too, considering my love for it.

Hey, am i sounding too serious? Sorry. I can be lucid and aggressive at times and this just happens to be one of those moments. Talk to you guys later.
